Apple’s Top Five

1

Be Friend Restaurant at Bangsak Beach

My favourite thing about Be Friend Restaurant is the view. The beachside location offers fantastic views over the Andaman Sea, especially around sun set.

The staff are very friendly and attentive. I do not drink much but I always want to try a different cocktail every time I visit. The restaurant is quite famous for it’s cocktails.

What To Eat

The Chicken Satay is delicious. The fresh seafood is pretty special too, I love the big shrimps. I also recommend the Masaman Curry.

Krua Luang Then in Pak Weep

Krua Luang Then is a little outside the main tourist areas of Khao Lak and caters for those looking for a more original Thai taste. That’s why I like it so much. The food has a very strong taste.

The restaurant also serves some real local dishes with ingredients more difficult to find in other restaurants. Some ingredients might not be for the squeamish so am not going to say what, you will have to go there to check it out yourselves.

As Krua Luang Then is more of a locals place, you might find it useful to know the name in Thai: ครัวหลวงเทน

What To Eat

The Fried Fish with Turmeric is certainly one of my favourites. At just 10 Baht a plate you have to order some Stir Fried Morning Glory.

Mae Pa Restaurant in Bang Niang

Mae Pa is a relatively new place near Khao Lak but is rapidly growing in popularity. It offers cheap, great tasting food in a nice clean setting located on Highway Four near Bang Niang. Like a lot of other people I only really go there for one particular dish (though they have a nice varied menu). The dish is Khao Soi which is a speciality from Chiang Mai in the North of Thailand. It is a rich curry soup with noodles and some nice tasty toppings.

What To Eat

Khao Soi with Chicken. At only 60 Baht it is probably the best value dish in Khao Lak. It is 5 star 🙂

Muu Grob Ob Ong at Build Market

Barbecued pork at Ob Ong

Muu Grob Ob Ong is one of the many food stalls at Build Market. Ob Ong means Barbecue Jar in English, after the way the food is cooked. Assorted meats are barbecued in clay jars topped with a metal lid. It is a a natural style of Thai cooking.

The stall is immensely popular, it is easy to identify as it will usually have the longest queues.

Ob Ong offers freshly barbecued pork belly, pork ribs, pork neck, pork tongue, chicken legs or half a whole chicken and even duck (the duck you have to order in advance). The barbecued meat is accompanied with an amazing Thai sauce too.

Muu Grob Ob Ong always uses good quality meats, serves amazing sauces and everything tastes fresh and delicious. Don’t visit Build Market too late if you are planning to get some food here, it often sells out early. If there is nothing available when you arrive, you can order food and then take a stroll around the market whilst it is cooked.

What To Eat

Muu Grob with Spicy Tamarind Sauce is my favourite but the pork ribs are pretty heavenly too. You might find it useful to know the name in Thai: หมู ไก่ อบโอ่ง นายขนม

Pa Kui Restaurant in Bang Niang

Pa Kui is my favourite breakfast place near Khao Lak. It serves cheap, southern style food that packs very intense flavours. The food is already prepared and there’s plenty of choice, perfect for a quick breakfast that is spicy, strong and real Thai.

What To Eat

Kanom Gin Nam Yaa is my recommendation. Kanom Gin is a bowl of thin noodles topped with a curry sauce, I choose Nam Yaa which is a strong curry sauce with fish and vegetables. On the table there are trays of extras you can add to your bowl. The extras vary daily but are usually some combination of green beans, pickled cabbage, fresh leaves, dried fish and sliced cucumber.
